Villarreal 4-4 Barcelona: Messi And Suarez Save Barca With Late Goals

On matchday 30 of La Liga, Villarreal snatched a point when placed against the League leaders, Barcelona. Villarreal held Barca 4-4 in what was expected to be an easy win for Barcelona.

Valverde decided to put Messi on the bench. Barcelona went ahead early in the game when Malcom set up an easy tap in for Coutinho in the 12th minute. In the 16th minute, Malcom headed a goal in the bottom left corner. From there on, Barcelona weren't able to elaborate on their lead due to poor finishing. Without Pique, Barcelona were making a lot of errors in defence. Villarreal took full advantage of this situation.

Just after Barcelona went 2-0 ahead, Chukwueze pulled one back for Villarreal in the 23rd minute. It took the Nigerian 2 attempts as the first one came back to him after hitting the post.

After the first half, the Yellow Submarine entered the pitch even stronger. Ekambi got the equaliser in the 50th minute with a smart finish which left the Catalan defence stranded. Seeing the imminent victory falling out of hand, Valverde substituted Coutinho for Messi at the hour mark. But it didn't help much in stopping Villarreal. They went 3-2 forward when Iborra put the ball in the back of the net despite Ter Stegen's attempts to resist it.

In the 80th minute, Bacca made it 4-2 and it seemed as if Barca had lost. Soon after the goal, Villarreal were outnumbered when Gonzalez fouled Suarez just outside the box and received a second yellow card. They were put under immense pressure and Barca looked to pounce. Messi smashed the ball towards the top left corner which hit the post and went in.

The hopes of the Catalan Club increased and they didn't disappoint. Suarez equalised with a last-minute volley in the 94th minute. This levelled the scores 4-4 and the match ended.

Villareal fans were saddened yet they appreciated their club's performance. Villarreal are at the 17th spot and are close to relegation at this moment. Their show in the Europa League has been impressive. They'll face Valencia in the quarterfinal.

Barcelona have an 8-point gap between themselves and Atletico Madrid. Atletico will travel to Camp Nou on Saturday for their La Liga clash against Barcelona.
